Are Filipinos turning rude?
I went to the DMV this morning for car registration renewal, and while in the DMV I thought to renew my drivers license at the same time. I went really early to avoid the long lines that is common in the DMV. The office opens at 8am. I was there by 8:05. There were two people in front of me. When my turn came for the front desk lady, Pinay, to assist, I was asked why I was there and I told her I wanted to renew my car registration and my driver’s license. She then gave me a form to fill out and told me to go the side and come back after the form had been completed.
As I was filling out the form, I noticed that it was only for the driver license renewal. I went back to the front lady after I completed the form. While I was handing her the form, I asked her if the form was also applicable for the car registration renewal. She said no and proceeded to tell me that I only told her about my driver’s license renewal. I quickly corrected her and all she could tell me was “Ah huh” in a rude manner. She then added, “Just bring this ticket to the window when your number is called and tell the window person that you would like your registration renewed too.” Okay… I thought how can that Pinay be so mean so early in this morning. Had she served difficult people already?
While I waited for my number, I watched the front desk lady as she assisted other people that were in line. All I can do was shook my head while she continued to be mean to others.
Alas, my number was called, “B015 to Window 16!”– another Filipina DMV rep. Unlike, the front desk lady, she was really helpful and pleasant. She courteously assisted me with my registration renewal, but unfortunately, it was too early for me to renew my drivers license as it does not expire until 3 months from today. She said that I should have come in before my registration expired because the late fees were outragously high. She joked that I will not be able to go shopping for a week. She was really nice to deal with.
I passed by McDonalds Drive-Thru before I headed to work as my stomach was growling. I ordered a number 9, a McSkillet Burrito. Drove to the first window to pay. The Drive-Thru was, you guessed it, Pinay as well. She greeted me cheerfully as I handed her my payment. I expressed my appreciation with “Salamat, Nay!” when she gave me back my card.
Wow! That were 2 really cool Pinays against 1 mean Pinay. The good still outnumbers the hmmm, not-so-nice? Filipinos. I still believe that most of us are not ill-mannered. I am still keeping the faith on most of us. I think we are still well known in being hospitable, kind, courteous and pleasant people. Go Filipinos on 2009!
